ESTE JUEVES INICIA LA FIESTAS DEL CARNAVAL EN ROSARITO

Rosarito.- Este jueves con la tradicional ceremonia de “Quema del mal humor” inician los festejos del Carnaval Rosarito 2011 “Joyas del Pacífico”; evento que culmina el próximo martes y en donde se espera la afluencia de decenas de miles de personas

El arranque de las actividades está programado desde las 18:00 horas con la presentación de artistas y grupos musicales en cinco distintos escenarios, para que en punto de las 20:00 horas se realice la “quema del mal humor”.

Cabe destacar que la entrada a la zona de carnaval es gratuita durante todos los días, lo que hace confiar a los organizadores en lograr una importante afluencia de visitantes de distintos municipios de la entidad y Sur de California.

El viernes, siguiendo con el programa, será coronada la corte real en el templete principal  por parte de las autoridades locales, en tanto que para sabado y domingo se tienen anunciados los desfiles de carros alegóricos y comparsas. Estos últimos están programados para las 14:00 horas sobre el 

bulevar Benito Juárez.

A fin de garantizar la seguridad de los asistentes al carnaval no se permitita la entrada de bebidas u objeto de riesgo, ademas de que habrá un dispositivo especial de vigilancia por parte de las distintas autoridades.

Los asistentes a esta fiesta popular disfrutaran de bailes populares, presentación de artistas, juegos mecánicos, zona comercial y gastronómica.

Las personas, grupos sociales o empresas que deseen participar en los desfiles de comparsas  y carros alegóricos pueden inscribirse en las oficinas del comité organizador hasta este viernes; son 1 mil dólares de premios para los ganadores.

A fin de apoyar el repunte de la actividad turistica y la organizacion del carnaval 2011, hoteles locales estan ofertando tarifas especiales a los visitantes, para cual pueden tener mas informacion en las oficinas de turismo o en las mismas empresas hoteleras.

Smart Border Committee SENTRI pass will soon cost $42.25

It’s going to get a lot cheaper to cross the border using a SENTRI fast pass.
The U.S. Department of Homeland Security plans to slash the price of the high-tech fast pass as part of campaign to encourage more low-risk, frequent border crossers to register for the program.

The price of a SENTRI pass will soon drop from $122.25 to $42.25 per applicant, valid for five years, said Pete Flores, U.S. Customs and Border Protection Acting Director for Field Operations in San Diego.
“We’re shooting to get as many as possible,” Flores said during an interview Friday.

CBP will also be opening a new SENTRI enrollment center just east of the San Ysidro Port of Entry. The facility, under construction at the site of the former Payless shoe store, will open in late February or early March, Flores said. CBP operates a SENTRI center in Otay Mesa, where the program started in 1995.

SENTRI passes allow pre-screened motorists and pedestrians to use special lanes to expedite their crossing. Applicants must pass background checks, submit fingerprints and an interview with CBP officers. Cars are also inspected.

SENTRI stands for Secure Electronic Network for Travelers Rapid Inspection and relies on a high-tech card and license plate readers and computers.

The program helps ease traffic congestion but is still not widely utilized. Only two percent of pedestrians use SENTRI to cross at San Ysidro, Flores said. Meanwhile about 28 percent of motorists who cross there use SENTRI, he said. Flores said a recent survey showed that price was one reason more people were not enrolling in the program.

San Ysidro Port Director Chris Maston, speaking at a binational meeting Friday in San Diego, said he hoped more pedestrians will enroll in the SENTRI program to help expedite foot traffic. Northbound waits for pedestrians topped two hours during the holidays, he said.

“I don’t think anybody should have to stand in line for two hours unless they’re at Disneyland and choose to do so,” said Maston.

On Dec. 23, it took about four hours to cross by foot, many heading north to do holiday shopping.

Maston said many people wrongly believe that the program is reserved for business people and professionals.

Maston provided an update about the SENTRI program during a meeting of the Coalition for Border Prosperity Smart Border Committee, a program of the San Diego Regional Chamber of Commerce, and was met with words of encouragement.

About 50 civic and business leaders from both sides of the border attended the meeting. Mexican officials said they would help get the word out about the new SENTRI developments.

Mayor Torres Tells Expats Of Progress As He Concludes Three Years In Office

ROSARITO BEACH, BAJA CALIFORNIA, MEXICO---Mayor Hugo Torres on Saturday told the United Society of Baja California of three years of efforts that have brought the city crime rate to its lowest since the state began compiling figures in 2000.

“If you thought Rosarito was safe 10 years ago, now it is as safe or safer,” Torres told one of the largest expatriate groups in the city which includes an estimated 14,000 foreign-born residents.

Torres, who also owns the landmark Rosarito Beach Hotel, took office in December of 2007 and leaves at the end of this month. Mayors in Mexico are limited to three-year terms.

Registration Underway For November 7 Rosarito-Puerto Nuevo Half Marathon

ROSARITO BEACH, BAJA CALIFORNIA, MEXICO---Registration is underway for the sixth Rosarito-Puerto Nuevo Half Marathon on Nov. 7, an event that organizers hope will attract 600 participants in various categories.

Categories for the event along the Pacific Ocean are men, women 18 to 24; 25 to 29 30 to 34; 35 to 39; 40 to 44; 45 to 49; 50  to 54; 55 to 59  and over 60 years. There also is a wheelchair category.

Trophies will be awarded for first, second and third place in each category, including wheelchairs. Cash prizes for the absolute winners in both branches are first $5,000 PESOS second $ 4,000 PESOS and third $ 3,000 PESOS.

3 Rosarito Beach, Mexico Officials Will Visit Las Vegas This Monday

Media Conference Set For 11:15 At Mexican Consulate

ROSARITO BEACH, BAJA CALIFORNIA, MEXICO---Three officials from Rosarito Beach, Mexico will visit Las Vegas this Monday on a promotional and information tour for the popular tourist destination 20 miles south of San Diego.

A media conference will be held at the Mexican Consulate in Las Vegas from 11:15 to 12:15.

Making the visit, which will include a meeting with Las Vegas Mayor Oscar Goodman, will be Rosarito Mayor Hugo Torres, Economic Development Director Hector Reyes and Convention and Visitors Bureau Manager Jesus Santos.

“Some media coverage in the U.S. of Mexico’s efforts against organized crime and drug cartels has given the impression that our area is unsettled for tourists,”

said Torres, who also is owner of the landmark Rosarito Beach Hotel.

“We’re visiting Las Vegas and other U.S. cities to assure people that this is not the case, as Mexico works closely with the United States on this binational problem".

“No tourist has been affected or targeted and Rosarito is more welcoming than ever, as we have created a special Tourist Police and a city department for tourist assistance".

“We have more than a million tourists a year to our beachside resort, who visit our world famous Puerto Nuevo Lobster Village; Baja Studios, where Titanic and Master & Commander were filmed; tour art galleries, surf, shop and enjoy our great spas.”

“Many of our visitors come from Las Vegas and we look forward to welcoming them again this summer,”
