Rosarito To Offer Tourist Information Booths Daily From 10 To 5 During July 4th Weekend

ROSARITO BEACH, BAJA CALIFORNIA, MEXICO---The city will have two information booths to assist tourists from 10 to 5 this Friday, Saturday and Sunday.

The booths will be in front of Oceana Plaza on Boulevard Benito Juarez in the city’s main downtown tourist district and at the world famous Puerto Nuevo Lobster Village.

Brochures and other materials will be available as well as staff who can answer visitors’ questions.

The booths are among many steps that the popular tourist destination 30 miles south of San Diego has taken this year to make its visitors feel even more welcome and secure.

Others include establishing a Tourist Police Force, plus a special city department and ombudsman to assist visitors.

“Rosarito has been an extremely popular tourist destination for the United States for decades, with more than a million visitors annually in recent years,” said Rosarito Mayor Hugo Torres.

“Unfortunately some unbalanced media coverage about the Mexican government’s crackdown on drug cartels has created the misleading impression that Baja is not safe for tourists.

“But in truth our visitors have never been more welcome or safer,” Torres said. “Those who have visited us this year can attest to that, as can the 14,000 expatriates who have chosen to call Rosarito home.”

The coastal city is known for its beach resorts, spas, extensive shopping, outdoor activities, culture, history, craftsmen, artists, fine dining and Baja Studios, where Titanic and Master & Commander were filmed.

The event, which has been in development for nearly 7 months, will feature some of North America’s best shortboarders mixed with excellent up and coming amateur surfers from the U.S. and Mexico.

“Finally a surf event is back in Northern Baja. It’s awesome that the city of Rosarito is stepping in to provide both local and international surfers an opportunity to showcase their talent and win some coin”, said Zach Plopper, Professional Surfer.

FDt Marketing, the management company behind the Rosarito Beach Pro-Am, feels they are bringing this contest to Rosarito at the perfect time of year, seeing huge potential for this year and beyond.

Rosarito Beach Mayor Hugo Torres Begins San Francisco Promotional Tour Today

ROSARITO BEACH, BAJA CALIFORNIA, MEXICO---Mayor Hugo Torres and other city officials today began a two-day San Francisco visit to promote tourism, business investment and real estate opportunities in this region.

The focal point of the visit is a forum called “Doing Business In Mexico,” which also includes representatives of other regions of the country.

Both the federal government of Mexico and the Mexican Consulate in San Francisco assisted in arrangements. Rosarito Economic Development Director Hector Reyes and Convention & Visitors Bureau President Laura Wong also are on the trip.

“Rosarito has been a popular tourist destination for the U.S. for decades, and we are the focal point for the construction of vacation and retirement homes along Baja’s Gold Coast,” Torres said. ”About 14,000 foreign nationals now call Rosarito home. In addition, many foreign firms have recognized the advantages of doing business here.”

But Torres said the some unbalanced media coverage of Mexico’s crackdown on organized crime have falsely created the impression that the area is unsafe.

“The battle against drug cartels is an important one that is of vital concern to both Mexico and the U.S.,” Torres said.

“But our visitors and typical residents are in no way at risk from it, despite many media stories that have suggested otherwise.

“Most recent stories and media outlets now recognize that fact, which has been verified by many leading U.S. officials, including the U.S. consul for Baja. But much damage has been done and we need to work hard to reverse the inaccurate perception.

“Trips like this will help do that by informing people that we have wonderful things to offer visitors, residents and investors, all in a safe and welcoming environment.

“We’ll continue with similar trips and other efforts in the future, to make sure the accurate story of our area is told.”

My Baja Real Experience

My husband and I own a condo 7 miles South of Rosarito and a home in La Mesa, Ca. I have owned the condo for 17 years and love Baja. We ride our Harley down here as much as we can.
Last Tuesday we rode our motorcycle on the free road to Ensenada and then cut across to The Guadalupe Valley on the newly paved road. It is a beautiful ride. Horses, cows, beautiful ranches and very peaceful. Absolutely wonderful.

We stopped along the way by the roadside so that my husband could stretch his back. A little white car with "Bimbo" decals on the side when by and then turned round and came back to check on us. They had turned around to see if we were OK and did we need help. Awesome!

I thanked the very nice gentlemen in the "Bimbo" car and thought to myself that all everyone hears about in the news and internet anymore is the bad things that seem to happen in Mexico. There are so many good things that happen here every day.

This is just one good thing that happened here in Mexico. Wouldn't it be nice if more people who live here or love Baja as much as I do could mention good things!

I sent an e-mail to the "Bimbo" company that day to thank their employees for stopping to see if we were OK. Also, I complimented "Bimbo" on how their employees looked so professional and being so caring about our welfare.

I went out and bought a loaf of Bimbo bread that afternoon!
Thank you,
Sherry Stevenson-Mahoney

Baja Is Safe For Visitors,Says Ranking U.S. Diplomat

ROSARITO BEACH, BAJA CALIFORNIA, MEXICO---Baja is safe for visitors and he hopes its vital tourism sector quickly rebounds, a leading U.S. diplomat told El Mexicano newspaper in a front-page story published Monday.

Ronald Kramer, head of the U.S Consulate in Tijuana, said that some coverage of Mexico’s war against drug cartels had falsely created the impression in the U.S. that the area is unsafe for visitors.

While the bi-national effort against drug cartels is a serious one, visitors are not targeted, Kramer said. He also praised the Mexican army and authorities for their successes in the effort.

Kramer expects efforts by Mexican leaders, including Rosarito Beach Hugo Torres, to be successful in rebuilding Mexico’s image, but said the country’s economy and many of its people currently are suffering because of the significant loss of tourism dollars.

Kramer also said concerns in past weeks about the H1N1 virus (also known as the swine flu) had hurt the area’s economy.

He cited as an example some cruise lines canceling voyages to Ensenada and diverting them to San Diego, which actually had more confirmed cases of the flu.

Rosarito Beach Receives $16 Million U.S. Bank Loan For Street Paving

ROSARITO BEACH, BAJA CALIFORNIA, MEXICO---The city has received a $16.6 million loan from a U.S.-based bank for additional street paving, Mayor Hugo Torres announced.

“The loan will allow for improvements that will benefit both our rapidly growing population and our more than one-million visitors a year,”
said the mayor of the popular seaside tourist destination 30 miles south of San Diego.

The loans come from San Antonio-based North American Development Bank. Torres and bank managing director Jorge Garces signed the loan agreement last week in Rosarito.

This is the first time the city has obtained a loan from a U.S. bank although that has occurred elsewhere in Mexico.

The terms from the U.S. development bank were the most favorable available, at 9.5 percent interest over 15 years. The repayment amount is in pesos to lock in the amount due, Torres said.

The money will be used for additional paving of city roadways where underground utilities already have been installed. This will aid traffic flow, make areas more accessible and improve air by reducing dust and emissions from slow-moving traffic.

“It also will help people have easier access to their homes in the rainy season, and make it quicker for emergency services to reach them,”
Torres said

In all, about 7 million square feet will be paved, about half of the 50 percent of city streets currently unpaved.

Under the terms of the loan, the work will be awarded based on an international bidding process. Construction is expected to begin in July of this year and take about a year to complete.

“The population of Rosarito is one of the fastest growing in Baja and we want our residents to have the best services possible,”
Torres said. “It also is important that we provide the best quality services to our many visitors.”

“Much has already been done, including extensive street paving, construction of the new Tecate-Rosarito Highway 2000 and major improvements to the scenic and free highways,”
he added. “Solid planning for the future is essential.”

Rosarito has an estimated population of 140,000, including 14,000 expatriates, primarily from the United States. It also has been the focal point for construction of vacation and retirement residences along the Baja coast from Tijuana to Ensenada.

More than a million people a year visit its hotels and resorts to enjoy outdoor activities, shopping, spas, Mexican culture, dining and attractions including the world-famous Puerto Nuevo Lobster Village and Baja Studios, where Titanic and Master & Commander were filmed.
