The Huish Family Share Their Rosarito Beach Experience

We loaded up and headed south of the border to Rosarito , Mexico. We share a home down there with two other partners (who lucky for us, rarely use it). Contrary to all the media hype, we feel very safe down there. The Pacific Ocean is beautiful.

Rosarito Crime Rate Reaches Lowest Level Since State Figures Have Been Compiled

ROSARITO BEACH, BAJA CALIFORNIA, MEXICO---Six-month crime figures here reached the lowest level since the state began reporting figures for the city and once again recorded the greatest reduction in all of Baja.

The year-to-year state rate for Rosarito from January through July of this year declined by 15 percent, compared to an average reduction of 7 percent for Northern Baja’s five cities.

The figures include all major crimes with the exception of drug offenses and weapons violations, which are handled by the federal government rather than the state.

The crime rate was the lowest in Rosarito at least since the state began reporting figures for the city in 2000 and probably longer than that, said Mayor Hugo Torres. Rosarito became a city in 1995.

The six-month figures follow a year in which crime declined in the city by 21 percent from 2008 to 2009, compared to a 10 percent average reduction in Baja.

“I hope these figures will be widely reported on both sides of the border,” Torres said. “Largely because of drug violence between rival drug gangs scattered throughout Mexico, some people, especially in the U.S., have the perception that our city is unsafe.

“But Rosarito has never been more secure for our visitors and residents, who include about 14,000 expatriates, most from the U.S.

Among six-month crime figures for Rosarito:

·        Homicides declined from 17 to 9, a rate lower than numerous U.S. cities, including Washington D.C.

·        Crimes of violence declined 38 percent, from 32 to 20

·        Robbery and burglary declined 21 percent, from 928 to 730

·        Residential burglaries declined 22 percent, from 298 to 233

·        Robberies with the threat of force declined 20 percent, from 128 to 102

·        Commercial burglaries declined 41 percent, from 34 to 20

·        Vehicle thefts declined 35 percent, from 339 to 221

Torres attributed the crime decline to exceptional cooperation between city, state and federal authorities, which he said could serve as a model for all of Mexico.

Torres ran for mayor in 2007 on a platform of increased security. Since then he has expanded the police force from 150 to 217 while replacing officers who did not meet standards, established a tourist police force and expanded citizen watch efforts.

He also brought in an Army captain on leave, Jorge Montero, to serve as director of public security

“Even with our outstanding results, I know there is additional work to be done,” Torres said. “Fighting crime anywhere is a lifelong challenge.”

On Saturday, October 9, 2010, all eyes will be focused on Cantamar, just south of Rosarito Beach, where writers, publishers, artists and others will celebrate books and the many other arts that are part of the culture and lifestyle of Baja California.  The Baja Book Festival is being sponsored by the Baja California Secretary of Tourism, the Rosarito Beach Convention & Visitors Bureau and the Baja Times.

Scheduled from 10 a.m.-5 p.m., at Joanna Jones Galeria y Café at kilometer 47.6 on the –Ensenada Carretera Libre (free road, and just 40 minutes south of the U.S. border), the Baja Book Festival is already stirring up Baja’s writer’s community and those to the north.  It will feature local legends like Tom Gatch, Marsh Cassady, Martina, Michael Miller, Peter Fowler, Cora Kerr, Melinda Bates, Nicole Beaudry and others.  In addition, the festival will have a Children’s Reading Area, hosted by Rosarito’s Friends of the Library, promoting literacy at an early age.

Besides books-a-plenty, there will be art and jewelry areas, service and nonprofit areas, food and entertainment.  Accommodation and restaurant discounts are available through the Newport Beach and Grand Baja Resort hotels, among others.  And luscious foods and beverages will feed the desire to read, so come ready to partake. The festival, which is anticipating drawing 300-600 people,  is already supported by the Nitro/CreatividadVisual, Baja Good Life Club, Newport Beach Hotel, Baja Bound, Bajamar golf course, Hogaza Hogaza, Ocean’s Flavor, and other businesses, but is seeking additional sponsors, exhibitors and, naturally, published writers.

Rosarito Beach on KLAA Radio Last Night; Live From Angel Stadium with Philip Friedman

Philip Friedman spent 2 segments on his radio show Sunday evening talking about his great weekend in Rosarito Beach. "My family and I love Rosarito Beach and just can't get enough of being here," said Friedman.

15 year old Patrick Friedman was also emphatic about his Rosarito weekend. "When you walk in to the Rosarito Beach Hotel, you just feel like you are part of the family," said Patrick. "The worst part about a trip to Rosarito Beach is having to go home," he said.

Don Ashley has been in Sportfishing for over 50 years and loves going to Rosarito Beach. The owner of Pierpoint Landing in Long Beach called in to the show to say that he wouldn't miss a trip to Rosarito Beach and that he has one of the best seafood meals he has ever had at Vinces Restaurant in downtown Rosarito Beach.

Philips show is broadcast live from Angel Stadium on AM 830 radio at 8 PM on Sunday evenings. You can also listen worldwide on www.AM830KLAA.com .

Rosarito Beach In The Newspaper by Philip Friedman

Rosarito Beach was also featured this week in Philip's article in the Daily Breeze. You can see it by clicking here-  http://www.dailybreeze.com/sportscolumnists/ci_15637484
Rosarito rebound: The seaside resort of Rosarito Beach, located 30 miles south of San Diego, had its best weekend for tourism of the summer with most major hotels at or near full capacity.
Tourism had slowed in Rosarito Beach the past three years because scattered drug violence in Mexico made some people in the U.S. concerned about security in the area.

"We had a 23 percent reduction in crime last year to our lowest level in five years, and the rate is down another 13 percent so far this year, Rosarito Beach Mayor Hugo Torres said.

Surf and pier fishing have been excellent for a few halibut and lots of barred perch and corbina right in front of the Rosarito Beach Hotel.
