TIJUANA.- Miércoles 20 de abril de 2011.- Luego de que se pusiera en marcha el Operativo Estatal de Información y Asistencia Turística Semana Santa 2011, todo se encuentra listo en los diferentes destinos turísticos de Baja California para recibir a los miles de visitantes que se desplazarán a lo largo y ancho del estado, en mayor proporción de este jueves 21 al domingo 24 de abril.

El Secretario de Turismo del Estado, Juan Tintos Funcke, explicó que los destinos en los que se prevé una mayor afluencia son San Felipe, Ensenada y Playas de Rosarito, así como los ranchos y balnearios de Tecate.

La Secretaría de Turismo estará participando con 46 servidores públicos, 9 unidades y contará con 16 módulos y oficinas para la atención de los visitantes en Tijuana, Playas de Rosarito, Ensenada, San Quintín, Tecate, Mexicali y San Felipe, con rondines hacia la zona sur hasta el poblado de Bahía de Los Ángeles.

Destacó además la participación de 12 unidades con 19 elementos de la corporación de auxilio turístico Ángeles Verdes quienes tendrán instalados puestos de mando al pie de la Rumorosa, en la autopista escénica y el sitio conocido como El Chinero en la carretera a San Felipe.

Asimismo reconoció la participación de las diversas dependencias de los tres órdenes de gobierno que participan en este operativo de información y asistencia turística, entre las que destacan la Secretaría de Seguridad Pública del Estado, la Procuraduría General de Justicia del Estado, Policía Federal, Policía Municipal, Secretaría de la Defensa Nacional y Secretaría de Marina.

Secretaría de Comunicaciones y Transportes, Dirección Estatal de Protección Civil, Procuraduría Federal del Consumidor, Aduana, Instituto Nacional de Migración, entre otras, así como Cruz Roja Mexicana, bomberos, grupos de rescate, comités de playas limpias y otros organismos.

En cuanto a la oferta turística, el titular de la SECTURE destacó que se cuenta en el estado con más de 400 restaurantes de clase turística, 66 hoteles de entre 4 y 5 estrellas, alrededor de 175 establecimientos entre ranchos, balnearios y campamentos dentro de la llamada Ruta Rural.

Finalmente el funcionario estatal invitó a los bajacalifornianos a aprovechar los descuentos que ofrecen los establecimientos afiliados al programa Se Turista en Tu Estado, que este año suma 685 negocios, y recordó que se cuenta además con la línea de asistencia turística 078, así como la página de Internet www.descubrebajacalifornia.com para mayor información sobre los diferentes destinos turísticos.

Por su parte, Armando Carrasco Villegas, Presidente del Comité de Turismo y Convenciones de Playas de Rosarito, dio a conocer los diferentes eventos y actividades que se contemplan como parte del Playa Fest 2011, mismo que se realiza del 16 al 24 de abril en el mencionado destino turístico.

Informó que como plato fuerte se llevará a cabo la presentación el viernes 22 del grupo de música pop-electrónica en español Moenia, mientras que el día sábado 23 se presentará el cantante de Reggae Fidel Nadal.

Viernes 15 de Abril de 2011.- El reconocido Chef norteamericano Rick Bayless se encuentra en Baja California con motivo de la grabación de la octava temporada del programa de televisión “Mexico, One Plate at a Time”, la cual se estrenará a finales del mes de septiembre y se difundirá en Estados Unidos y varios países, presentando la gastronomía y el naciente arte culinario que está posicionando a esta entidad en el mundo entero.

Profundamente emocionado por la recepción que le han brindado en Baja California, Rick Bayless dijo que fue hace dos años cuando decidió venir a Baja California con la intención de conocer el movimiento gastronómico que está cobrando cada vez más fuerza.

“Yo había estado aquí hace unos 25 años y después de tanto tiempo regreso para llevarme esta grata sorpresa porque se ha creado aquí una cultura de comida que es para mí ahora la más impresionante de México y es por ello que decidimos para nuestra octava temporada enfocarnos directamente en Baja California y filmar 13 programas”, dijo.

Explicó que luego de enamorarse de la cocina mexicana, el enfoque de su carrera ha sido promover la verdadera cocina de México más allá de sus fronteras por lo que sus libros y el programa son en el idioma inglés ya que se difunde en los Estados Unidos y Europa, así como muchos otros países a los que llegará esta temporada dedicada a Baja California.

Finalmente mencionó que Baja California tiene todo lo que se necesita para crear esta nueva tradición en la cocina, toda la materia prima con los mejores productos como son los vinos, la mejor marisquería, productos orgánicos; “y aparte de todo eso tienen la oportunidad de cultivar la técnica que de las bases a esta nueva cocina”, concluyó Bayless.

Por su parte el Secretario de Turismo del Estado, Juan Tintos Funcke, mencionó que Baja California es un estado privilegiado por contar con una riqueza descomunal que ha dado origen a lo que hoy conocemos como cocina Baja Med, la cual se basa en los productos de nuestros mares, con las especies más cotizadas como el atún aleta azul, abulón, ostión y almeja generosa, entre otras, así como aves, carnes y las legumbres de la mejor calidad.

“Contamos también con la producción del noventa por ciento de los vinos de México y una industria cervecera de mucha tradición, así como elaboración artesanal de estos productos que ha venido tomando fuerza lo que es el complemento perfecto, por lo que cada día más gente quiere venir a Baja California para degustar la gastronomía típica de Baja California”, afirmó el funcionario estatal.

En ese sentido, agradeció a Rick Bayless el haber decidido grabar su programa en nuestro estado y en ese marco, el titular de la Secretaría de Turismo entregó a nombre del Gobernador del Estado, José Guadalupe Osuna Millán, un reconocimiento a Rick Bayless por el invaluable apoyo a la promoción turística de Baja California a través del programa “Mexico, One Plate at a Time”.

ESTE JUEVES INICIA LA FIESTAS DEL CARNAVAL EN ROSARITO

Rosarito.- Este jueves con la tradicional ceremonia de “Quema del mal humor” inician los festejos del Carnaval Rosarito 2011 “Joyas del Pacífico”; evento que culmina el próximo martes y en donde se espera la afluencia de decenas de miles de personas

El arranque de las actividades está programado desde las 18:00 horas con la presentación de artistas y grupos musicales en cinco distintos escenarios, para que en punto de las 20:00 horas se realice la “quema del mal humor”.

Cabe destacar que la entrada a la zona de carnaval es gratuita durante todos los días, lo que hace confiar a los organizadores en lograr una importante afluencia de visitantes de distintos municipios de la entidad y Sur de California.

El viernes, siguiendo con el programa, será coronada la corte real en el templete principal por parte de las autoridades locales, en tanto que para sabado y domingo se tienen anunciados los desfiles de carros alegóricos y comparsas. Estos últimos están programados para las 14:00 horas sobre el

bulevar Benito Juárez.

A fin de garantizar la seguridad de los asistentes al carnaval no se permitita la entrada de bebidas u objeto de riesgo, ademas de que habrá un dispositivo especial de vigilancia por parte de las distintas autoridades.

Los asistentes a esta fiesta popular disfrutaran de bailes populares, presentación de artistas, juegos mecánicos, zona comercial y gastronómica.

Las personas, grupos sociales o empresas que deseen participar en los desfiles de comparsas y carros alegóricos pueden inscribirse en las oficinas del comité organizador hasta este viernes; son 1 mil dólares de premios para los ganadores.

Smart Border Committee SENTRI pass will soon cost $42.25

It’s going to get a lot cheaper to cross the border using a SENTRI fast pass.
The U.S. Department of Homeland Security plans to slash the price of the high-tech fast pass as part of campaign to encourage more low-risk, frequent border crossers to register for the program.

The price of a SENTRI pass will soon drop from $122.25 to $42.25 per applicant, valid for five years, said Pete Flores, U.S. Customs and Border Protection Acting Director for Field Operations in San Diego.
“We’re shooting to get as many as possible,” Flores said during an interview Friday.

CBP will also be opening a new SENTRI enrollment center just east of the San Ysidro Port of Entry. The facility, under construction at the site of the former Payless shoe store, will open in late February or early March, Flores said. CBP operates a SENTRI center in Otay Mesa, where the program started in 1995.

SENTRI passes allow pre-screened motorists and pedestrians to use special lanes to expedite their crossing. Applicants must pass background checks, submit fingerprints and an interview with CBP officers. Cars are also inspected.

SENTRI stands for Secure Electronic Network for Travelers Rapid Inspection and relies on a high-tech card and license plate readers and computers.

The program helps ease traffic congestion but is still not widely utilized. Only two percent of pedestrians use SENTRI to cross at San Ysidro, Flores said. Meanwhile about 28 percent of motorists who cross there use SENTRI, he said. Flores said a recent survey showed that price was one reason more people were not enrolling in the program.

San Ysidro Port Director Chris Maston, speaking at a binational meeting Friday in San Diego, said he hoped more pedestrians will enroll in the SENTRI program to help expedite foot traffic. Northbound waits for pedestrians topped two hours during the holidays, he said.

“I don’t think anybody should have to stand in line for two hours unless they’re at Disneyland and choose to do so,” said Maston.

On Dec. 23, it took about four hours to cross by foot, many heading north to do holiday shopping.

Maston said many people wrongly believe that the program is reserved for business people and professionals.

Maston provided an update about the SENTRI program during a meeting of the Coalition for Border Prosperity Smart Border Committee, a program of the San Diego Regional Chamber of Commerce, and was met with words of encouragement.

About 50 civic and business leaders from both sides of the border attended the meeting. Mexican officials said they would help get the word out about the new SENTRI developments.

1000 Mile Bicycle Ride to put a Positive Spin on Baja

San Felipe, BC, Mexico - January 10, 2011 - The first annual Baja Love Ride will be held February 2011. This “ride for a cause” fundraising event will entail a 1000 mile bicycle ride from Rosarito to Cabo San Lucas. The ride will last 15 days. Riders and teams can participate in the entire 1000 mile course or they can join in two other shorter rides as part of the Baja Love Ride. There will be a five mile “Good Start” ride, which represents the good start a child needs in life; which is perfect for children and families to enjoy. There will also be a single day (one leg) community ride complete with overnight camping as an option. All proceeds from each leg of the Baja Love Ride will go to children’s charities located in the communities along the route.

Each participant and team is being encouraged to involve friends, colleagues, and family from around the globe to either join in the ride or sponsor riders. With so many children in need in Baja, each and every dollar raised will make a real difference in the lives of children who simply have no control over their situation. Baja charitable groups that will be directly impacted by the funds raised include Club de Ninos Y Ninas Rosarito, Casa de Fe in San Felipe, Fundacion Ayuda Ninos La Paz, Hogar del Ninos in Todos Santos, along with others.

While the main goal of the Baja Love Ride is to raise as much money for children’s charities as possible, organizers believe there are added benefits if the ride is a success. Recent negative news reports have painted the Baja area in an unfair light. The organizers of the event hope the Baja Love Ride will reinforce what Baja residents already know---the area is safe, welcoming and a wonderful haven that everyone should support and enjoy. Tourism has declined and local businesses have felt the crunch due to this mischaracterization. This has filtered down to the children’s charities as they have seen fewer donations and struggle to support the needs of the children of Baja. The Baja Love Ride organizers hope the ride will change the negative perception of the area and believe it will also give Mexico the chance to showcase the huge investment in the Baja highway system.

Ride founders, John and Rachel Pack, of Baja Good Life Club have partnered with Bill and Carol Spradlin of the Mexican non-profit Casa de Fe in hope the ride will achieve all of its goals and become an annual community event that helps more and more children each year while promoting the Baja area as the safe and pleasurable destination they know it to be.

California Native Shares His Impacting Experience In Baja

I am a native Californian who has been visiting Baja since I was a child. There have been many changes over the years, but few as dramatic as in the decade or so since Rosarito became an incorporated city. Particularly in the recent years, Rosarito has faced a crisis and stepped forward with deliberate speed and leadership to bring order and safety to its residents and visitors.

Now as a full-time ex-patriot foreign resident, my real-life experience in Rosarito is far different from the one I see portrayed in the media. Of the 14, 000 or more full-time foreign resident Americans and Canadians living here, I am unaware of a single incident where any innocent foreign residents or tourist visitors have been victims of the violence visited upon us by the drug cartels. All but a few of the incidents between drug dealers have taken place, while technically within the city limits of Rosarito, far into the deserted canyons and hills surrounding the population center.

Teen-agers are not, perhaps, the most prudent tourists, but even these young people have ventured into our city for years and not one has encountered the predicted danger. In 2009, there are fewer of them so far, but they are coming here, and they are having fun-filled, violence-free vacations at bargain prices. Even the State Department "alert" stated calmly that Mexico is one of the most visited countries by Americans, who are advised to stay in tourist areas! All of the business zone in central Rosarito is a "tourist area" where visitors walk from taco stands to fish markets, from disco bar to family restaurant, from motels to luxury condos, and from sidewalk cafe to art gallery.

I am a member of the Rosarito Friends of the Library, and we visit libraries throughout the city without fear, even in outlaying colonias. Recently major corporations such as Wal-Mart, Home Depot, Applebees, Burger King and GNC Nutrition have opened locations in Rosarito. Others are coming. They share our confidence in the safety and sunshine we enjoy in Rosarito.

Just so you know... I am semi-retired, but have nothing to sell. I don't own a business here, don't sell real estate, and don't have a financial interest in the tourists who either visit or don't visit Rosarito and Baja. It is simply an injustice to watch repeated media reports that use years old video tape and information from other parts of the country while they stand in San Ysidro, California and do their reporting with cameras pointing toward Mexico... where they have never visited.

Life in Baja as a Single Mom

Perhaps it’s the foreign language that intimidates many “would be” visitors of Mexico. Or, it could be the tales from south of the border that keep many from experiencing our sister country. For example, I myself have heard the horror stories; the man and wife who went to Mexico and were never heard from again; the two guys who spent five years in a Mexican jail because a Mexican citizen hit their car; The woman who drank the water in Mexico and nearly died (or she did die, depending on who is telling the story).

So how safe is Mexico? I felt safe enough to venture on the trip alone, but ended up taking Ms. Star Thompson along with me. Star, a twenty-seven year Chula Vista resident, had never been to Rosarito. Her fathers warning of the forbidden country had, to this date, been taken as the word of the almighty himself.

When visiting any country, Mexico being no exception, one should follow some basic rules. We did exactly that on a Friday afternoon as we made our way to Las Rocas Hotel Resort & Spa, located just ten minutes south of Rosarito Beach, Mexico.

First on the priority list, and
RULE #1: Purchase Mexican Insurance before you cross the border. Extended coverage for your vehicle for the entire weekend is only $14.95. A minor traffic accident in Mexico without insurance may result in big problems, so spend the fifteen bucks and get insured.

A quarter mile this side of the border we learned to drive as the Mexicans did as we merged with the locals and visitors alike who anxiously waited the cross the border.

RULE #2: Don’t let the merging traffic freak you out! Keep your sights on merging and stand your ground or you will still be trying to cross the border come Saturday.

RULE #3: Keep your eyes on the unfamiliar road and traffic.

Star and I practiced the first three rules with great ease and made it to our resort destination in just under forty-five minutes. I had discovered this beautiful resort on the Internet. The photographs on the Las Rocas web site had convinced me that this resort would most definitely be the “ideal getaway” for single parents.

It was immediately apparent that the photos shown on the Internet didn’t do justice to this picturesque resort. A distinguished-looking Hispanic man sat at a Baby Grand piano in the main lobby. The tunes he played were vaguely familiar and set the relaxing mood for the entire weekend.

Upon introducing ourselves to the front desk clerk, we had the pleasure of meeting our host “Mr. Jimmy”, as the staff referred to him. He is one of the partners of Las Rocas.

Jimmy and his partners purchased the seventy-four Room/Suite Resort just three years ago. The partners have continued to improve the resort by reinvesting any and all profits back into the establishment, and it shows. Jimmy himself lives in a condo close to the resort and directs the day to day business of running this spectacular resort.
I questioned him on visiting or living in Mexico and agreed with his response and opinions wholeheartedly. Jimmy feels safer in Mexico than he does in the states. Children do not come to school with weapons in this country. Nor did he deny that Mexico, like every metropolitan city in the United States, has drug cartel who break the law and have their own problems. Their existence in Mexico is much is less apparent than it is in Los Angeles or other cities here in The United States.

“Las Rocas”, I learned, means “The Rocks”. From our second-story, corner, pool side suite, Star and I wondered if the namesake was the result of the giant rock in the middle of the swimming pool. Or maybe the fact that the resort itself seemed to be built into the side of a rock cliff. Not that it mattered much to either of us as within minutes of seeing our suite, we had declared that we wanted to live here forever. The grounds were beautiful, the pool like something out of a movie and the staff was the warmest and friendliest that either of us had ever experienced.

Nightfall arrived and we joined Jimmy at the bar. We met Robert, another American, who owned a smaller hotel and restaurant just down the road. Within the hour, every table was filled and the singing began. Jimmy started Karaoke with “Sweet Home Alabama” and got the crowd in the mood for what turned out to be several hours of singing. Kirk, an attorney in the entertainment industry and another partner in the Las Rocas property, arrived from Los Angeles around 9:00 PM. A handsome (and single) man, Kirk had come to Las Rocas to celebrate his 40th Birthday on Saturday followed by his cousin’s wedding on Sunday.

It was 1:00 AM before Star and I got up the nerve to sing into the microphone, but you should have heard us belting out Tom Jones’ “Delilah” and several other oldies. Eventually, they made us stop and we retired our worn out vocal cords.

Saturday morning was spent by the pool. We chose the pool closest to our suite and lounged comfortably with many of the previous night’s Karaoke stars. Food was cooked poolside and the smell in the air was a wonderful mix or carne asada and saltwater. The time scheduled for my massage arrived and I made my way to the Spa where I was greeted by Elaine. Elaine, an American as well, runs the spa at Las Rocas and proudly escorted me on a tour of the facility. Mr. Rodriguez, the architect happened to stop by later and I had the pleasure of meeting him as well.

I felt like I was in Beverly Hills. Elaine escorted me to a changing room where I was given a soft, thirsty, terry robe to slip into. I changed and stepped into the foyer where Jose, a thirty-five year massage veteran, waited to take me to my massage room. I laid face down and went to heaven, as the non-English speaking Jose released a year of pent up tension. I think I might have asked him to marry me. Single parenting is a tough and stressful job and I have decided that we definitely deserve to pamper ourselves on occasion.

The floors of the spa are done in coral colored marble, so shiny you can almost see your reflection. There’s a full gym facility with a view of the blue pacific waters. The auroma therapy baths are surrounded by glass with the same incredible view. A full nail and makeup salon overlooks a popular spot on the cliffs for weddings. Star was having her nails done for the evening’s birthday party, to which we had been invited.

As I waited for my turn to repair two broken nails, Laura, our manicurist, suggested I go ahead and shower at the spa first. After showering and while towel drying, I noted the dispenser on the wall. On one side it read “soap” in English. I looked at the other side(without my glasses on) and it looked to be word similar to lanolin. “It must be lotion or lanolin in Spanish” I thought and proceeded to cover my entire body generously in the lathery stuff. A few minutes later Elaine popped in. I asked her just what kind of lotion this was, as it was burning a little. Elaine smiled slightly as she informed me that it was some type of soap gel. Back in the shower I went!

Rule #4: Never use anything on your body that is written in Spanish if you don’t know for sure what it is.
We joined Kirk and his relatives outside on the cabana for a scrumptious dinner of lobster and steak followed by salsa dancing. We met the cousin and her groom-to-be as well as Kirk’s parents, who shared with me that they were building a house just down the way from the resort.

Star and I enjoyed our second night at Las Rocas and checked out at noon on Sunday. The roadside shops beckoned us with their display of iron beds and beautifully carved chairs and tables. Unable to resist, we wandered from vendor to vendor admiring their artful furniture and knick knacks. One cannot visit Rosarito without a stop at the Rosarito Beach Resort, so we settled on an ocean-view lunch of New York Steak. Of course, the shopping here is hard to resist. So in comfortable shoes we made our way up and down the uneven sidewalks, wandering into each little bizarre. The Mexicans hawking their wares called us Movie Stars as we passed their place of business and I thought of how flattered the average American woman must feel at the compliment.

The wait to cross the border back into our homeland was minimal. Thirty-five minutes at most. Of course, we aquired two children’s desks adorned with laminated pictures of Walt Disney’s Ariel, miniature glass angels with halos, three of the most beautiful Barbie dresses you have ever seen, and a bracelet for my daughter.
I don’t know about the rest of you, but I’m ready to go back and experience some the best hospitality you’ll ever find in this part of the world!

ROSARITO BEACH, BAJA CALIFORNIA, MEXICO---Mayor Hugo Torres on Saturday told the United Society of Baja California of three years of efforts that have brought the city crime rate to its lowest since the state began compiling figures in 2000.

“If you thought Rosarito was safe 10 years ago, now it is as safe or safer,” Torres told one of the largest expatriate groups in the city which includes an estimated 14,000 foreign-born residents.

Torres, who also owns the landmark Rosarito Beach Hotel, took office in December of 2007 and leaves at the end of this month. Mayors in

Mexico

are limited to three-year terms.

Torres said he initially did not want to run for Mayor of the city he helped found in 1995: “I’m a business man not a politician. I was borrowed for this job.”

But he was troubled by corruption in the police department, which included a failure to crack down on drug gangs in the city. “If I had owned a hot dog cart, I might have just moved it,” he said. “But with the hotel, I couldn’t do that.”

The first year in office was marked by an assassination attempt on his new police chief Jorge Montero, an Army captain on leave, the need to replace most officers and killings between rival gangs.

“I was threatened at the same time, but we had to get through it and we did,” he said. “When my police chief survived and decided to stay on, I knew we were going to be OK.”

To ensure that Rosarito remains an excellent city in the future, Torres has worked to expand drug prevention efforts, visited all city schools and helped develop more community programs, including the city’s first Boys & Girls Club.

Also, he said, “We should continue to keep an eye on the police, which is something we didn’t do enough of in the past.”

Torres said he regrets that more people in the U.S. are not aware that Rosarito is safer than ever, in part because of extensive media coverage of struggles with drug gangs elsewhere in Mexico including Juarez, 600 miles to the east.

“Unfortunately, we have not been able to bring the tourists back,” he said. Tourism is the largest contributor to the city’s economy.

Torres thanked USBC members for their support and for being excellent ambassadors for Rosarito by helping inform people in the U.S. what living in the city really is like.

“We loved working with you over the years,” USBC secretary Judy Westphal told the mayor. “You’ve been absolutely fabulous.”

More than 550 Runners Compete In Rosarito-Puerto Nuevo Half Marathon

More than 550 people participated Sunday in the sixth Rosarito-Puerto Nuevo Half Marathon along a coastal route through the popular tourist destination.

The event began at 7:30 a.m. at the Pabellon shopping center at the north entrance to the city and concluded at the world famous lobster village.

"We are very pleased with the outcome of this event,” said Mayor Hugo Torres. “Not only was the turnout excellent, it’s a great event to combine athletic competition with the promotion of tourism.”

Competitors were divided by age categories as well as gender and a special wheelchair/physically challenged category. Winners received from about $500 to $50, plus lobster-shaped trophies.

The event was sponsored by the city’s Convention & Visitors Bureau, the Baja Department of Tourism and the Puerto Nuevo Restaurant Association. It was founded by Puerto Nuevo restaurant owner Rosa Maria Plascencia.

Categories for the event along the Pacific Ocean are men, women 18 to 24; 25 to 29 30 to 34; 35 to 39; 40 to 44; 45 to 49; 50 to 54; 55 to 59 and over 60 years. There also is a wheelchair category.

Trophies will be awarded for first, second and third place in each category, including wheelchairs. Cash prizes for the absolute winners in both branches are first $5,000 PESOS second $ 4,000 PESOS and third $ 3,000 PESOS.

For winners in the wheelchair categories in both branches first will be $1,500 PESOS, second $1,000 PESOS and third $500 PESOS. The winning Rosarito residents in men and women’s categories will each receive $2,500 PESOS. They must prove at least three years of residence with a valid I.D.

Commemorative medals will be awarded for the first 150 men and 50 women who finish and 600 event T shirts for participants.

Entry fee is $100 pesos or $10 U.S. and registration is available at the Rosarito Convention & Visitors Bureau, the Institute of Sport in Rosarito and the Restaurant Puerto Nuevo II.

“The Divas and all the headliners said they are definitely coming back, as well as the competitors,” said Boys & Girls Club President Rosy Torres. “We already are looking at possible dates for next year.”

Rosarito-Ensenada Bike Ride To Top 20 Million Mile Mark This Saturday

Now in its 30^th year the Rosarito-Ensenada 50-Mile Fun Bicycle Ride will surpass 20 million total miles covered with its Sept. 26 event.

About 5,000 riders are expected for the festive scenic ride, much of it along a coastal route, from Rosarito to Ensenada, said ride organizer Gary Foster.

During the past 30 years since 1979 the iconic twice-yearly event has been held 52 times and almost 400,000 riders have participated, Foster said.

“This great anniversary edition of the ride will be as festive as years past, both for our many riders and the thousands of people who come to view the event and cheer on the participants,” Foster said.

Added Rosarito Beach Mayor Hugo Torres, whose city hosts the event: “The ride is one of the signature events for Rosarito and this region of Baja. It attracts excellent people and creates a great atmosphere. We’re greatly looking forward to it.”

Harley Riders Donate Backpacks & Supplies For 300 Rosarito Beach School Children

More than 250 motorcyclists from the

donated backpacks and other items for 300 Rosarito school children at this weekend’s annual Harley Charity Run.

As well as the school supplies, bicycles and toys were among the items donated, said Leticia Gonzalez, director of DIF, the city’s family social services agency, who helped coordinate the event.

Ride organizers Martin and Sonia Resendez said the concept was developed years ago when during a motorcycle tour to the area they learned of the needs of some of the city children. Since, the city and charity run have become part of their lives.

“We are very grateful for the donation from the Harley riders,” said Rosarito Mayor Hugo Torres. “The goodwill from

Thousands of people filled City Hall and municipal plazas Wednesday night as Rosarito joined
the nation in celebrating the 200th anniversary of

Mexico

’s independence.

Hundreds of government officials, students and other residents joined in a parade from Boulevard Benito Juarez to City Hall to start the celebration.

"This date is of great significance for the history of our country,” said Mayor Hugo Torres. “Exactly two centuries ago, a group of patriotic men and women began a struggle that laid the groundwork for what we now know as a country.

“They were brave and were motivated by the ideal that we all have the right to be free and happy within our national territory. We reiterate the importance of fighting for the principles of social justice and freedom.”

Also in the parade were city police and firefighters, troops from various military branches and civic groups.

Marchers were met by the mayor; the first lady, Rosa María Ramírez Torres; Brig. Gen. D. E. M. Avalos Dario Pedraza, commander of the Second Brigade of Special Forces; city council members and town clerk, Javier Hernandez Tovalín.

At 11 p.m. Mayor Torres delivered the traditional grito, battle cry for freedom, from the balcony of City Hall.

Outside City Hall thousands of people joined in the celebration with included Mexican music, food and dancing plus a fireworks display.

Playas de Rosarito será sede del Primer Festival Internacional de Mariachi y Ballet Folklórico, evento que se llevará a cabo los días 2 y 3 de octubre y en el que se contará con la presentación del reconocido “Mariachi Divas”, agrupación ganadora del premio Grammy.

En conferencia de prensa se dio a conocer el programa de actividades correspondientes a este evento internacional que además cuenta con la particularidad de que se realiza a beneficio de la construcción del Club de Niñas y Niños de Playas de Rosarito, tal como lo informó Rosy Torres, representante de este organismo en dicha localidad.

Explicó que durante estos dos días se llevarán a cabo competencias de mariachi y ballet folklórico con agrupaciones participantes provenientes de Chula Vista y Anaheim, California, Tucson, Arizona, así como de Tijuana y Mexicali.

Además del “Mariachi Divas”, ganadoras del premio Grammy en el 2009 en la categoría de mejor música regional mexicana con su álbum “Canciones de Amor”, formarán parte del elenco musical la pequeña cantante Maya, Timoteo – El Charro Negro, Olga Flores, Folklórico Ixtlazihuatl, Génesis, y Beto Jiménez Maeda, entre otros.

Por su parte, Alan Bautista Plascencia, Director de Mercadotecnia de la Secretaría de Turismo del Estado (SECTURE), indicó que este es un evento extraordinario que reúne varios elementos como son el difundir nuestra cultura, la música mexicana, logrando atraer visitantes del sur de California y nuestro propio estado, pero que además tiene una causa social muy importante, por lo que cuenta con todo el respaldo de la mencionada dependencia estatal.

Enseguida dio a conocer que todos los residentes de Baja California que presenten su tarjeta “Se turista en tu Estado”, recibirán un descuento del 50 por ciento en el costo de los boletos para el Festival Internacional del Mariachi.

Presente también en la conferencia de prensa, Gil Sperry, organizador, mencionó que está muy contento de realizar este evento por primera vez en Playas de Rosarito, con el que se apoya al Club de Niños y Niñas y además se fomenta la cooperación entre los residentes de ambos lados de la frontera.

Participaron también el señor Enrique Gamboa, Presidente del Club de Niños y Niñas de México, así como Jesús Santos Martínez, Gerente del Comité de Turismo y Convenciones (Cotuco) de Playas de Rosarito. B.C.- Oscar Escobedo Carignan, quien hasta este día fungió como Secretario de Turismo, agradeció al Gobernador del Estado, José Guadalupe Osuna Millán, así como al sector turístico de Baja California, por la oportunidad que se le brindó para desempeñarse por casi tres años como titular de SECTURE en la entidad.

Indicó que durante el tiempo en que estuvo al frente de la dependencia estatal se presentaron retos muy importantes para el turismo, no sólo en Baja California, sino en el plano nacional e internacional, sin embargo gracias a la participación activa del sector empresarial turístico y al apoyo brindado por el Gobierno del Estado, hoy se vislumbra ya una franca recuperación en la entidad, lo anterior de acuerdo con los indicadores de los últimos meses.

Detalló que durante la presente administración se han realizado esfuerzos sin precedente en materia de impulso al turismo, con logros como los siguientes:

· Logramos posicionar en cuarto lugar nacional en el Índice de Competitividad Turística de los Estados elaborado este año por el Instituto Tecnológico de Monterrey.

· Se creó el Consejo Consultivo Turístico de Baja California, mediante el cual se afianzó la participación de la iniciativa privada en las políticas y acciones relacionadas con el impulso de la actividad turística en la entidad.

· Baja California se ha posicionado además como el tercer lugar nacional en materia de inversión turística privada, ocupando en el presente año el primer lugar en la región norte de México.

· Se consolidó un 500% de aumento en la aplicación de recursos federales y estatales para la realización de obra pública de impacto al turismo y la promoción de Baja California.

· Se logró la construcción de la primera etapa del Centro de Convenciones Metropolitano proyecto que implica una inversión de 400 millones de pesos y que dará a nuestra región de un recinto de clase mundial para eventos y exposiciones.

· Se concluyó una nueva área de exposiciones en el Centro Estatal de las Artes de Mexicali, con una inversión superior a los 20 millones de pesos, la cual será utilizada como centro de convenciones.

· Se creó el Plan de Mercadotecnia del Estado, con una reingeniería de la imagen turística de Baja California

· Por primera vez se estableció un programa oficial para impulsar el turismo médico y de salud, siendo pioneros en esta materia en el país creándose el Comité Estatal para el Desarrollo y Promoción del Turismo Médico y de Salud del Estado de Baja California

· Se creó el Cluster de Cinematografía.

· Se logró el Programa de Apoyo a la Industria Cinematográfica y Audiovisual de Alto Impacto y el anuncio de la filmación de una nueva serie de Warner Brothers.

· Se emitió la nueva Ley de Turismo del Estado y la Ley para la Promoción, Fomento y Desarrollo de la Industria Cinematográfica y Audiovisual del Estado

· Gracias al trabajo realizado para reposicionar la imagen del estado como destino turístico en lo que va del año se registra un incremento del 16.4 por ciento de ciudadanos norteamericanos que visitan Baja California, de acuerdo con Home Land Security de los Estados Unidos

· Con el mejoramiento considerable de la imagen de la entidad se logró incrementar la participación en eventos emblemáticos como la Baja 1000 y el Paseo Ciclista Rosarito – Ensenada y este año un incremento del 55 por ciento en la afluencia a las fiestas de la vendimia.

· En lo que respecta a ocupación hotelera, en lo que va del presente año se registra un aumento del 12% en relación al año anterior en la demanda hotelera, con más de 1 millón 300 mil cuartos noche ocupados.

· Se consolidó la Ruta del Vino como producto turístico y se elaboró el programa para el ordenamiento urbano y la vocación en el Valle de Guadalupe.

· Se elaboró el programa parcial de desarrollo turístico de La Bufadora y el programa sectorial de desarrollo turístico del municipio de Tecate.

· Se actualizó el programa de desarrollo turístico urbano y ecológico del corredor costero San Felipe a Bahía de Los Ángeles y se sentaron las bases para la actualización del Cocotren.

· Se logró el convenio entre la Secretaría de Turismo del Gobierno Federal y la Secretaría de Comunicaciones y Transportes para evitar el pago obligatorio del servicio de remolque de los cruceros en el Puerto de Ensenada.

· Se lograron nuevas disposiciones para facilitar el ingreso de autobuses y microbuses turísticos para dar servicio a los destinos de Baja California

· Se puso en operación el cruce rápido para usuarios de servicios médicos y turísticos, así como la segmentación de la línea. Entre otras importantes acciones.

· En los últimos meses se reactivó la venta de condominios.

Oscar Escobedo Carignan aseguró que todo lo anterior es el reflejo de que existen hoy en día mejores condiciones en la entidad para el desarrollo de la actividad turística, sin pasar de lado los retos que se enfrentan en temas como las políticas del control de dólares, la competitividad en materia de cruceros y la reactivación de algunos sectores muy específicos.

Nos es grato comunicarles que mediante la voluntad de la comunidad artística de Playas de Rosarito, será posible disfrutar por primera vez del evento ROSARITO ART FEST, “La Feria del Arte”, con la participación de mas de 60 reconocidos artistas, quienes son valuarte de la artes plásticas y visuales de la región.

Dicho festival se llevará a cabo los días 16 y 17 de octubre del 2010, en el Boulevard Benito Juárez, Zona Centro de Playas de Rosarito. (Zona turística, frente al hotel Rosarito Beach)

Este festival es resultado de un esfuerzo de lo mismos artistas de Playas de Rosarito que se unen a través de una acción social como una respuesta a la inquietud de llevar la imagen de la zona, y del estado de Baja California en general, hacia mejores y mayores niveles.

Así como también, hacer del conocimiento de la comunidad nacional e internacional que Playas de Rosarito cuenta con un rostro diferente, iluminado por la cultura, las artes y el bienestar social.

En dicho evento se contará también con espectáculos de música, danza y folklore de primer nivel. Gastronomía local, reconocida a nivel internacional por su calidad variedad y creatividad.

Mediante la realización de estas acciones buscamos apoyar el crecimiento del municipio de Playas de Rosarito y pretendemos proyectarle como un punto importante para el arte y para el turismo de nuestro país.

Objetivos específicos

1.- Para esta primer edición del festival, contar con una afluencia de 2,000 personas, entre comunidad local y visitantes interesados en visitar Playas de Rosarito y/o adquirir arte.

Más de 200 pescadores participaron en el cuarto torneo del Circuito Internacional de Pesca Deportiva Baja California 2010 “Copa Gobernador” Se grabó el programa “Con Caña y Carrete” que se difundirá a nivel nacional e internacional

PLAYAS DE ROSARITO.- Con más de 200 participantes se llevó a cabo de manera exitosa cuarto torneo del Circuito Internacional de Pesca Deportiva Baja California 2010 “Copa Gobernador” frente a las costas de Playas de Rosarito, informó la Secretaría de Turismo del Estado (SECTURE).

Durante la ceremonia de premiación, el Secretario de Turismo del Estado, Oscar Escobedo Carignan, manifestó que la práctica de la pesca además de que es una actividad que genera afluencia de visitantes y derrama económica, fomenta la sana convivencia y muchos valores como el respeto y el cuidado a nuestro entorno.

“En Baja California tenemos un gran potencial para convertirnos en el destino de pesca número uno en el país y es por ello que el señor Gobernador José Guadalupe Osuna Millán le ha dado tanto impulso a esta actividad”, mencionó.

Indicó que una de estas acciones es la realización por segundo año consecutivo del Circuito Internacional de Pesca Deportiva Baja California 2010 “Copa Gobernador”, que este año gracias al empuje de los servidores turísticos, incluyó en uno de sus cinco torneos a Playas de Rosarito.

Por su parte Pedro Sors García, director de la empresa Promotora de Pesca Deportiva y conductor del programa “Con Caña y Carrete” reconoció el gran apoyo que el Gobierno del Estado ha brindado a la pesca deportiva con la realización de torneos y acciones de promoción, lo que ha permitido reposicionar a Baja California en esta materia.

Paralelo a esta actividad se llevó a cabo una clínica de pesca deportiva en la que participaron 100 niños de escasos recursos, la cual fue impartida por Philip Friedman, Conductor del programa de Radio 976 Tuna, en Los Ángeles, California, quien ha sido un incansable promotor de Baja California a través de su programa de radio, el portal de Internet y sus colaboraciones en diversos medios de comunicación, entre estos el diario L.A. Times.

En el evento de premiación se contó además con la presencia de Citlalitl Pereda Gómez, Presidenta de Cotuco en Playas de Rosarito, Jorge Pimentel, Presidente de la Asociación Estatal de Pesca Deportiva, así como de Juan Carlos Téllez, Jefe de Pesca Deportiva de la Secretaría de Pesca y Acuacultura del Estado.

Finalmente el Secretario de Turismo del Estado hizo una invitación a todos los pescadores para participar en el quinto y último torneo del Segundo Circuito Internacional de Pesca Deportiva Baja California 2010 “Copa Gobernador”, el cual se realizará el sábado 25 de septiembre en el marco de las festividades del evento Baja Sea Food Expo.

I FESTIVAL INTERNACIONAL DEL MARIACHI Y DEL BALLET FOLKLORICO

El sábado 2 y domingo 3 de octubre del 2010, se llevará a cabo, por primera vez en Playas de Rosarito, el I Festival del Mariachi y el Ballet Folklórico. La sede de este importante evento cultural binacional, será el Hotel Rosarito.

Durante este festival habrá una competencia entre grupos amateur de Mariachis y de ballet folklóricos tanto de Estados Unidos como de México, teniendo como premio la cantidad de $ 1,000 dólares en efectivo para cada rama. Habrán 2 categorías, Secundarias/Preparatorias y Universidades/Postgrado. Participaran 2 equipos de México y 2 Equipos de Estados Unidos en cada una de las disciplinas. Inscripción será gratis.

Las actividades de este Festival se inician desde el viernes 01 de Octubre con un cóctel en el Hotel Rosarito, seguido por una presentación del lo que es el Club de Niños y Niñas de Rosarito, por Rosy Torres. Después se darán a conocer los horarios de las actividades de los siguientes 2 días y la localización de las áreas de prácticas designadas en el hotel tanto para el mariachi como para el ballet folklórico.

Para el sábado 2 de octubre se inicia la competencia de Mariachi de 10 de la mañana a las 12 del mediodía. Posteriormente empieza la competencia de Ballet Folklórico de la 1 a las 3 de la tarde. Después se tendrá el evento más importante de este festival, que es la presentación en concierto de un grupo que ha ganado un premio Grammy y que es muy reconocido por su trayectoria, que es el Mariachi Divas, este espectáculo inicia a las 7 de la tarde.

Para el domingo 3 de octubre, continúa la competencia, iniciando con el Ballet Folklórico de 10 de la mañana a 12 de mediodía. Después sigue el concurso de Mariachis de 1 a las 3 de la tarde. A las 3.30 de la tarde se inicia la premiación a los grupos ganadores para terminar con la ceremonia de clausura del evento a las 4.15 de la tarde.

Los precios de entrada a las competencias por día es de $ 10 dólares por adulto y $ 7.50 para niños menores de 12 años. La entrada al magno concierto es de $ 25.00 dólares para adultos y $ 20.00 dólares para niños menores de 12 años. Si compran antes de septiembre un boleto para todos los eventos el precio para adultos es de $ 40.00 dólares y $ 25.00 dólares para niños menores de 12 años. Habrá precios especiales para los Rosaritenses.

Todo lo recaudado en este evento será a beneficio de la construcción del Club de Niños y Niñas de Rosarito; se espera la asistencia de aproximadamente de 800 a 1,000 personas que vendrán a Rosarito a disfrutar de este evento de ambos lados de la frontera.

“Para nuestra ciudad es muy importante tener un evento cultural de esta categoría, ya que generará buenas noticias de Rosarito a nivel nacional e internacional” dijo el alcalde de la ciudad, el C. P. Hugo Torres Chabert.

Este evento es organizado por un residente de Rosarito, de origen norteamericano, el profesor Gil Sperry, quien ha escrito libros sobre la música de mariachi y es un conocedor del tema, y por su cariño a Rosarito quiso organizar un evento de esta categoría además dándole un beneficio al Club de Niños y Niñas de Rosarito, una institución creada para impulsar la educación y los valores entre la niñez y de esa forma mantenerlos alejados de los vicios.

“Queremos que el Festival del Mariachi y el Ballet Folklórico se convierta en un evento emblemático para Rosarito y que genere un flujo de turismo importante para la ciudad “, dijo el Profesor Gil Sperry, organizador del evento.

Bicyclists are getting ready to roll on September 25 at the historic
bike ride that attracts thousands of riders from around the world.

“I am honored and thrilled to be part of your nation’s Bicentennial
celebration,” said event promoter Gary Foster of San Diego, attending
a press conference in Tijuana with Baja State Secretary of Tourism
Oscar Escobedo at which his Rosarito Ensenada Bike Ride was named an
official event of Mexico’s 2010 celebration. “We have been warmly
welcomed by the people of Baja for 31 years, and we look forward to
continuing the tradition for many years to come.”

Rosarito Beach Mayor Hugo Torres, whose city hosts the event said:
“The ride is one of the signature events for Rosarito and this region
of Baja. It attracts excellent people and creates a great atmosphere.
We are greatly looking forward to it.”

The Rosarito-Ensenada ride has been called the Original Party on
Wheels. Revelers in costume roll along, tossing candy to children
along the course. Beach cruisers strap boom boxes to their handlebars.
Parents tow children in bike trailers. And racing teams form pace
lines, trying to beat the official record of 1:52:54 set in April of
2007.

In addition to the tourism revenue that is generated for the local
Baja California economy, the Rosarito Ensenada Bike Ride also benefits
the people of Baja with its ‘One Way Ride Program,’” Foster explained.
“Participants have the opportunity of making a positive difference on
the life of less fortunate people, by donating a gently used bicycle
at the event.” Many riders volunteer to bring a bike for donation to
the Start Line or Finish Line Fiesta, and event organizers distribute

buses riders and their bicycles, and because they return to the United
State through the rapid SENTRI lane, our riders enjoy a quick trip
back across the border.” Round-trip bus rides from San Diego’s Balboa
Park are available with early online registration for $89 USD. Many
hotels offer special rates and are also participating in the Border
Fast Pass program which can cut border waits in half, especially on

Shuttles are available on the event course from the finish line to the
start line before and after the event. So if participants stay in
Rosarito Beach, they can take the shuttle back to Rosarito after the

La práctica del golf y la pesca deportiva son algunas de las actividades que se ofrecen entre Ensenada y Playas de Rosarito, por lo que promotores y servidores turísticos anunciaron junto con la Secretaría de Turismo del Estado (SECTURE) la realización de dos importantes eventos.

En primer término, Citlalitl Pereda Gómez, Presidenta del Comité de Turismo y Convenciones de Playas de Rosarito anunció la realización del Torneo de Pesca Deportiva a desarrollarse en Playas de Rosarito, en el marco del Circuito Internacional “Copa Gobernador 2010”, el próximo sábado 21 de agosto.

Precisó que el mencionado circuito que consta de un total de 5 torneos, ofrece una bolsa de más de 500 mil pesos en premios en las categorías de fondo y superficie. “Aunque es el segundo año que se realiza este circuito, Rosarito será por primera vez incluido y el torneo se realizará en Puerto Salina La Marina”, mencionó la presidenta de Cotuco.

Agregó que con este motivo se prepara una gran fiesta alrededor de este evento deportivo que incluirá actividades para todos los miembros de la familia; “habrá comida, bebidas, programa artístico”, dijo.

Por su parte, Héctor Rosas Rodea, representante de Bajamar, dio a conocer la realización del Torneo Abierto de Golf Vendimia 2010, el cual se realizará el sábado 28 de agosto a beneficio de la Fundación “Becas Baja” en el mencionado desarrollo turístico.

Explicó que conjuntamente con la Asociación de Profesionales Inmobiliarios (AMPI) se lleva a cabo este torneo por tercera ocasión, mismo que tendrá un costo de participación de 125 dólares que incluyen los 18 hoyos, lunch, bebida y comida de premiación.

Rosarito Crime Rate Reaches Lowest Level Since State Figures Have Been Compiled

---Six-month crime figures here reached the lowest level since the state began reporting figures for the city and once again recorded the greatest reduction in all of Baja.

The year-to-year state rate for Rosarito from January through July of this year declined by 15 percent, compared to an average reduction of 7 percent for Northern Baja’s five cities.

The figures include all major crimes with the exception of drug offenses and weapons violations, which are handled by the federal government rather than the state.

The crime rate was the lowest in Rosarito at least since the state began reporting figures for the city in 2000 and probably longer than that, said Mayor Hugo Torres. Rosarito became a city in 1995.

The six-month figures follow a year in which crime declined in the city by 21 percent from 2008 to 2009, compared to a 10 percent average reduction in Baja.

“I hope these figures will be widely reported on both sides of the border,” Torres said. “Largely because of drug violence between rival drug gangs scattered throughout

, some people, especially in the

U.S.

, have the perception that our city is unsafe.

“But Rosarito has never been more secure for our visitors and residents, who include about 14,000 expatriates, most from the

Among six-month crime figures for Rosarito:

· Homicides declined from 17 to 9, a rate lower than numerous

U.S.

cities, including Washington D.C.

· Crimes of violence declined 38 percent, from 32 to 20

· Robbery and burglary declined 21 percent, from 928 to 730

· Residential burglaries declined 22 percent, from 298 to 233

· Robberies with the threat of force declined 20 percent, from 128 to 102

· Commercial burglaries declined 41 percent, from 34 to 20

· Vehicle thefts declined 35 percent, from 339 to 221

Torres attributed the crime decline to exceptional cooperation between city, state and federal authorities, which he said could serve as a model for all of

Mexico

Torres ran for mayor in 2007 on a platform of increased security. Since then he has expanded the police force from 150 to 217 while replacing officers who did not meet standards, established a tourist police force and expanded citizen watch efforts.

He also brought in an Army captain on leave, Jorge Montero, to serve as director of public security

“Even with our outstanding results, I know there is additional work to be done,” Torres said. “Fighting crime anywhere is a lifelong challenge.”

El viernes 30 de Julio comenzó esta fiesta del Aniversario del Papas & Beer, en donde aproximadamente 8,000 mil personas disfrazadas de los personajes de Los Picapiedra, el tema elegido este año, se dieron cita en este antro para celebrar sus primeros 27 años de existencia.

El sábado 31 de Julio se llevó a cabo otra fiesta en donde se le pidió a los asistentes que fueran vestidos de Blanco, para seguir celebrando este aniversario y que tuvo una asistencia aproximada de 4,000 gentes que disfrutaron el ambiente y bailaron hasta ya entrada la madrugada.

Para el domingo 1º de agosto continuaron los festejos y esta vez para los ¨SOBRE-BEBIENTES¨, en honor a todos aquellos que lograron aguantar los tres días seguidos de fiesta. Este evento se ha vuelto una tradición en Rosarito y este año fue un éxito, por el número de asistentes que tuvieron, sin que se registraran incidentes mayores.

Este mismo día se llevó a cabo en el Hotel Las Rocas la primera edición del evento denominado Bodas y XV Años, una Expo junto al Mar, en la cual se dieron cita los profesionales de la región en cuanto a Banquetes y Bebidas, Belleza y Vestuario, Fotografía y Video, Renta de Equipo, Invitaciones, Decoración, Recuerdos y en fin, todo lo que se puede necesitar para celebrar estos eventos, tan importantes en la vida de la gente.

Gracias a estos eventos nuevamente se registró una buena ocupación hotelera del orden del 65 % el viernes y el 87 % el sábado, lo que viene a corroborar que es a través de los eventos de calidad, como se motiva a los turistas a trasladarse a nuestra ciudad, lo cual genera una importante derrama económica para la región y se puedan dar noticias positivas de Rosarito.

A pesar de que hubo una gran afluencia de turismo, nuevamente no se registraron incidentes mayores, debido al operativo implementado por la policía municipal en coordinación con las otras dependencias de seguridad a nivel estatal y federal.

El Comité de Turismo y Convenciones de Playas de Rosarito y el Municipio, seguirán apoyando este tipo de eventos, ya que los resultados concretos están a la vista.

Rosarito Tourism Has Best Weekend With Major Hotels Near 100 Percent

---This seaside resort area 30 miles south of San Diego just had its best weekend of the summer, with most major hotels at or near capacity.

Tourism promoters attributed the extremely busy weekend to a series of events including concerts, which attracted 20,000 people on Friday night alone.

Events included a concert by internationally known Pitbull to celebrate 25 years of Mexicali on the Beach, and an oceanfront Saturday night concert by Reik, part of the landmark Rosarito Beach Hotel’s 85^th anniversary celebration.

The 422-room Rosarito Hotel, Grand Baja Resort, Festival Plaza and Las Rocas were among hotels at or near capacity Friday and Saturday nights, as restaurants, spas, taco stands and shops, especially in the downtown area, also were extremely busy.

“The Rosarito Committee for Tourism and Convention is convinced that having quality events, like we had this weekend, is a large part of how we can build a positive image of our destination,” said ConVis president Citlalitl Pereda.

Pereda said another busy weekend was expected this weekend as the 50,000-square-foot beachfront club Papas & Beers celebrates its anniversary.

UN MAGNIFICO FIN DE SEMANA EN ROSARITO - Mexicali en la Playa, Pitbull y Reik

Gracias a los eventos que se tuvieron en la ciudad este fin de semana, comenzando el jueves 22 con el concierto de Playa Limbo y Chris Syler, para abrir Mexicali en la Playa; y el viernes con la presentación de REIK, en el marco del 85 aniversario del Hotel Rosarito y el concierto de PITBULL, para celebrar los primeros 25 años de Mexicali en la Playa, se tuvo una gran afluencia de turismo para beneplácito de los servidores turísticos locales y para la ciudad en general.

La ocupación hotelera estuvo casi al tope con más del 70% en los hoteles chicos y el 100% en los hoteles grandes, que se reflejó también en otros establecimientos como restaurantes, taquerías, tiendas de autoservicio, tiendas de curiosidades, gasolineras etc., que se vieron beneficiados por el regreso del turismo a Rosarito.

Sin incidentes mayores que lamentar, a pesar de la gran cantidad de visitantes que tuvimos durante el fin de semana, fue el reporte que se recibió por parte de la policía municipal, esto gracias al operativo que se desplegó en coordinación con la policía federal, el ejército, la policía estatal preventiva y la policía ministerial.

Más de 20 mil personal abarrotaron la ciudad la noche del viernes para asistir a estos dos magnos eventos, y lo mejor de todo fue que se divirtieron y pasaron un rato agradable sin que se registrara ningún conflicto, a pesar de la gran cantidad de gente que se concentró entre el Hotel Rosarito y la Colonia Barbachano.

Mexicali en la Playa comenzó desde el jueves 22 de julio con la presentación del grupo Playa Limbo y de Chris Syler, quién prendió a los asistentes a este evento con su música y ritmo, que puso a bailar a toda la gente.

El viernes 23 de julio hizo su presentación estelar PITBULL, que con su música alegre y contagiosa emocionó a la gente asistió en un buen número a este espectáculo. Este Puertorriqueño, conocido mundialmente, estuvo en Rosarito, como el platillo fuerte del evento de Mexicali en la Playa que este año cumplió apenas 25 años y vaya forma de celebrarlo.

Esa misma noche se tuvo otra gran evento para celebrar el 85 aniversario del Hotel Rosarito, el concierto del grupo orgullosamente Mexicalense, REIK, quien también ha sido reconocido a nivel internacional y que deleitó a sus seguidores con los mejor de su repertorio musical, en un marco espléndido, teniendo como fondo el ruido de las olas del mar.

Para el sábado 25 de julio, continuando con Mexicali en la Playa, se presentó con gran éxito, el grupo de SUSSIE 4, que son muy reconocidos en el área de Mexicali, de donde nos visitaron un gran número de personas que vinieron a Rosarito a disfrutar de estos eventos y a pasar unos días de descanso, alejados de las inclemencias del tiempo.

Rosarito’s 2nd Opera By The Sea Scheduled For Saturday, July 17

ROSARITO BEACH, BAJA CALIFORNIA, MEXICO--The second Opera By the Sea event will be begin at 3 p.m. on Saturday July 17 at the park at the Rosarito’s center for the arts and culture (CEMAC).

The free event this year will include Bizet’s Carmen and Strauss’s Die Fledermaus. In addition to the operas there will be Irish and Russian ballets, living statues, an art exhibit, face painting, clowns and workshops. Mexican food and drinks will be sold.

Closed circuit television also will be available to provide enhanced viewing for those attending the event.

Opera By the Sea is sponsored by the city in coordination with the Municipal Institute of Arts and Culture and with the support of Isaac Name, director of the School of Music Northwest in Rosarito and the Institute of Culture of Baja California.

As well as residents, Opera By the Sea is open to visitors to this popular Mexico tourist city. More than 3,500 attended last year’s inaugural event, created to promote culture as well as provide a beautiful outdoor event in a lovely setting that can be enjoyed by all.

La 3ra Feria Anual “Serena Health Fair” es un evento de promoción de servicios de salud enfocada en los “Baby boomers” y “seniors”, la mayoría de origen norteamericano que gozan de su retiro en la zona costa de B.C. entre Tijuana y Ensenada; se llevará a cabo el sábado 10 de julio en el Rosarito Beach Hotel.

Actualmente se estima una población permanente de más de 26,000 residentes los cuales requieren de una infinidad de productos y servicios. Lo anterior aunado a su nivel de ingreso promedio lo convierte en uno de los nichos de mercado más atractivos y rentables de la región.

Rosarito July Fourth Party Provides Celebration For Expatriates and Benefits Free Health Clinic

---More than 800 people, many from this city’s large expatriate community, attended a traditional July Fourth celebration Sunday with a few Mexican touches for flavor.

The six-hour event in a tented area between the Rosarito Beach Hotel and the ocean had two purposes.

Not only did it provide a U.S.-style Fourth of July celebration, it also was a successful fundraiser for the Flying Samaritans, the group that organized the event and also runs a free clinic in downtown Rosarito for Mexicans who have no other source of health care.

Twelve vendors provided food and drinks for the event. It included hot dogs and hamburgers, ribs, apple and cherry pie, plus salmon and strawberry tacos with blueberry chipotle, which both provided a Mexican touch and a red, white and blue color scheme.

The crowd listened and danced to music provided by the Truck & Roll Band, Nueva Esperanza & Cochimi Dancers, Miryam Malak, Beth Wilson and the Not Guilty Band.

Cuba Gooding Sr., a part-time Rosarito resident and a goodwill ambassador for the city, sang a medley which included his 1970’s hit with the Main Ingredient, “Everybody Plays The Fool.”

A grand fireworks display over the ocean ended the event, which was also attended by Rosarito Beach Mayor Hugo Torres, other city officials and two vice consuls from the U.S. Consulate in Tijuana.

Major sponsors included Bancomer Preferred Customer Division, the City of Rosarito, its Convention & Visitors Bureau, the Rosarito Beach Hotel and PIRO Baja, which provided fireworks.

The event raised abut $8,500 for the 15-year-old Flying Samaritans clinic, which serves about 300 patients a month under the direction of nurse Nancy Callison, said Flying Samaritan Susan Smith

“It’s a big boost,” said Flying Samaritans president Dean Stalcup. “Still, it represents lessthan half of our yearly budget and donations have been very hard to generate recently. We hope the publicity from this event will generate more.”

SAN DIEGO---Hundreds of Baja lovers and government officials from both sides of the border flocked to Saturday’s second annual Baja By the Sea event at San Diego’s Seaport Village.

The eight-hour event featured exhibits --- and many free samples --- of signature Baja food and wine, as well as booths highlighting art, tourism, hotels, services and products of the popular region.

Each of Baja’s five cities had exhibits at the event. Several Baja mayors, including Hugo Torres of Rosarito, attended and pitched in to make a giant bowl of cerviche to help inaugurate Baja By The Sea.

The event also featured many statements of good will and the importance of partnership between Baja and neighboring Southern California.

Baja California Gov. Jose Guadalupe Osuna Milan thanked San Diego Mayor Jerry Sanders for his great support, including assistance in helping train Baja’s recently launched Metropolitan Tourist Police force.

Steven Kashkett, U.S. general in Tijuana, spoke of the benefits from being in the region and being able to enjoy the things that Baja has to offer. “Ours is one region that is truly binational, bicultural and bilingual,” he said.

Being based in Tijuana, he is able to enjoy those things everyday, Kashkett said, while urging “those who live on this side of the border to come down and enjoy them soon.”

San Diego Port Commissioner Lee Burdick said of the region that “our partnership benefits both countries.” She added that Baja wines “rival some of the best made in California.”

Baja By The Sea was sponsored by the state of Baja, its restaurant association, cities and other groups.

From noon to 6 on at Seaport Village in the Embacadero Park North, Baja By The Sea will highlight the tastes and activities of the popular tourist region. Each of the its five cities, including Rosarito, will have a booth featuring local flavors and other attractions.
